What is Preplanning?

In relation to final expenses, the term ‘preplanning’ generally refers to the act of documenting one’s wishes for funeral and/or cemetery wishes. The best preplanning involves an itemized list of goods and services that will be used by the funeral home and/or cemetery.

Research tells us that when a loved one dies and the family has to make the final arrangements, they often feel as much stress about making the decisions and choices as they do about having to pay for the costs involved.

Even the simplest funeral and cemetery wishes can require some difficult decisions to be made.

To imagine what planning funeral and cemetery arrangements is like when a loved one dies, imagine having to plan a wedding with only a few days notice!

For some people that are preparing their estate or the estate of a loved one, the term ‘preplanning’ or ‘getting things in order’ refers to a process that involves the completion of estate documents, some of which can be obtained from a lawyer’s office or funeral home. Information and vital statistics should be documented so that when a death occurs, a death certificate can easily be produced by the funeral home and insurance and pension benefits can be applied for. Decisions also need to be made, such as who will be the executor after the death occurs, who will care for the kids, and who will inherit possessions. These decisions involve the completion of a will.
